Car manufacturer Volkswagen admitted to EPA officials in 2015 that it had rigged emissions tests for some of its diesel engines to make the vehicles appear more environmentally friendly than they were. Subsequent tests found that the vehicles emitted up to 40 times more than the legally permitted pollution levels.
