17. Anadarko 2014 ($5,150 million)
As part of a civil settlement in 2014, oil and gas producer Anadarko agreed to pay US$5.1 billion to US authorities and thousands of people bringing personal injury claims, following investigations by the US DOJ, EPA and federal prosecutors in Manhattan into environmental contamination by the company. At the time, it was the largest financial penalty for pollution in US history, though it has since been surpassed by multi-billion US dollar resolutions with BP and Volkswagen.
