Akita Nicole Adkins is an attorney with the SEC’s FCPA unit in Fort Worth, Texas.

Raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Adkins went to Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, studying political science and graduating in 1999. While studying she was also a member of the American Mock Trial Association, and subsequently went on to obtain her law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, qualifying in 2003.

While at law school, Adkins interned with the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and then a year later with the now defunct law firm Howrey.

After graduating she secured a job as an associate with Foley & Lardner, where she gained her first FCPA experience, carrying out work in Nigeria, South Africa, Mozambique and Poland.

In 2008, she moved to Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, now one of the most highly regarded law firms in the FCPA space. While at Gibson Dunn, she advised clients on internal investigations tied to foreign bribery and sanctions violations.

Atkins joined the SEC’s enforcement team in 2010, and moved to the FCPA unit in 2013. She worked on the SEC’s US$5 million FCPA settlement with oilfield service company Key Energy Services in 2016. While at the securities regulator she has written commentaries for the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention.
