Jones Day

Jones Day has a large international FCPA practice, with partners in Tokyo and Shanghai as well as across the US working on internal investigations, compliance and monitorships. The firm has four partners working on FCPA matters at its DC office.

Jones Day has been leading retail chain Wal-Mart’s internal corruption investigations in Mexico, India, Brazil, China and South Africa. The company has reportedly spent US$730 million on internal investigations and compliance matters tied to the probe.

Hank Walther, a former assistant chief supervising the Justice Department’s Foreign Corrupt Practices Act unit, joined the firm’s DC office in 2012. While at the DOJ Walther conducted and supervised many of the criminal division's foreign corruption investigations and prosecutions, and has conducted financial fraud and corruption investigations in the US and in more than 25 other countries.

Partner Peter Romatowski, a former federal prosecutor and chief of the securities and commodities fraud unit in the Manhattan district attorney’s office, works on monitorships and is representing a major European oil company in DOJ and SEC investigations into alleged FCPA violations.

Meanwhile, Joan McKown advised tire company Goodyear Tire and Rubber on its US$16 million FCPA settlement with the SEC in 2015. Goodyear's subsidiaries were accused of paying bribes to secure sales in Kenya and Angola.

Before joining Jones Day in 2010, McKown spent 17 years at the SEC, rising to chief counsel of the regulator's enforcement division.

A fourth partner, Eric Snyder, splits his time between Washington, DC, and São Paulo in Brazil, a jurisdiction that has in recent years attracted plenty of investigations work in the wake of the corruption scandal engulfing the country's state-controlled oil company Petrobras.

Snyder joined Jones Day in 2016 from the Department of State, where he was leading the government’s response to the congressional investigation into the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Snyder is also a former Manhattan prosecutor.
