Katie Raut (on detail)

Katie Schettig Raut is a trial attorney in the Justice Department criminal division fraud section's Foreign Corrupt Practices Act unit. She joined the foreign bribery unit in February 2015. She's currently serving on detail as associate counsel in the Biden White House.

Raut earned a bachelor's degree in political science and psychology from the University of California, graduating summa cum laude in 2005. She graduated from Yale Law in 2008.

She began her legal career as a judicial clerk at the district court in Baltimore, Maryland.

Raut then spent five years working in Latham & Watkins's Washington, DC, office.

There, the Los Angeles-area native focused on securities litigation, spearheading the defence of AgFeed Industries against a Securities and Exchange Commission complaint alleging that the company had reported fake revenues in its China operations. The Tennessee-based animal feed manufacturer resolved the charges with an US$18 million settlement in which it neither admitted nor denied the charges.

In 2011, Raut represented an 83-year-old Auschwitz survivor, who was battling the German government after being denied restitution payments for being a victim in the Holocaust. Raut, along with another Latham lawyer, successfully appealed the German government's decision, allowing the woman to receive the compensation.

An avid runner, Raut competed in track events in college at the University of California, Los Angeles and at Yale Law School. “It’s such a part of my routine, my daily life,” Schettig told the UCLA Daily Bruin student newspaper in 2004. “I’ve always wanted to have new challenges in my life, and I’m the kind of person that always adds things on to my busy schedule.”

She was married in January 2015 to Anant Raut, a 2001 Harvard Law School graduate who is currently a special counsel to the assistant attorney general in the Justice Department's antitrust division.
