Justin Goodyear
Justin Goodyear was a trial attorney in the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act unit until he left the Justice Department in 2015 to practise at WilmerHale.
He joined the criminal division fraud section in November 2010 and was initially assigned to securities cases.
He prosecuted Roland Kaufmann, CEO of business consulting company Axius, who pleaded guilty in January 2013 to violating the Travel Act by conspiring to bribe purported stock brokers and to manipulate Axius stock. Kaufmann was sentenced in June 2013 to 16 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and was ordered to pay a US$450,000 fine. He forfeited US$298,740 gained through his criminal activity.
Goodyear also prosecuted CGM, a subsidiary of the global brokerage and trading firm ConvergEx Group. In 2014, the subsidiary was sentenced and ordered to pay a criminal penalty and restitution of US$26 million for wire fraud and conspiracy to commit securities and wire fraud. The subsidiary pleaded guilty in December 2013 to fraudulently charging clients millions of dollars in unwarranted and hidden fees. It paid an US$18 million criminal penalty, forfeited US$12.8 million and paid US$12.8 million in restitution to defrauded customers.
In parallel cases, Jonathan Daspin, the head trader at the subsidiary, and Thomas Lekargeren, a sales trader at a different ConvergEx subsidiary, pleaded guilty in New Jersey to conspiracy to commit securities and wire fraud.
Goodyear in 2011 prosecuted Donald Johnson, a former managing director of the NASDAQ Stock Market, who pleaded guilty to participating in an insider trading scheme by buying and selling stock in NASDAQ-listed companies based on material, non-public information. Johnson was sentenced in August 2011 to 42 months in prison and ordered to forfeit US$755,066.
In his early career years, Goodyear was an associate at Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York and a law clerk for Robert A Katzmann in the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in Manhattan and US District Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald of the Southern District of New York.
Goodyear graduated from Harvard University and received his law degree from Columbia University.
