When the witnesses were collectively asked how much money the government is spending on contracts in Afghanistan, they were unable to answer senator's questions at a Capitol Hill hearing. But it was clear that the sum would be in the hundreds of billions, if not more. In 2008, the Army alone awarded $165 billion in contracts.
